في عمله هذا (اتجاهات في الترجمة) يقدم لنا الأستاذ "بيتر نيومارك" من "بوليتكنيك" وسط لندن، مساهمة هامة لفهم أفضل لطبيعة الترجمة الحقيقية وقد أفاد المؤلف من إلمامه الواسع بما كتب في نظرية الترجمة، ومن خبرة سنين عديدة في تدريس أساليب الترجمة، ومن خبرته الواسعة والفنية في هذا المجال، أفاد من كل ذلك تقديم كتاب مدعم بالأمثلة لفهم افضل لجوانب كثيرة من مهمة المترجم.
تأتي أهمية ما يقدمه نيومارك الاساسية في معالجته المفصلة للفروق بين الترجمة الدلالية والترجمة الاتصالية، حيث نجد أن الترجمة الدلالية تركز بصورة رئيسية على المحتوى الدلالي للنص، بينما تؤكد الترجمة الاتصالية بشكل أساسي على فهم المستقبلين (القراء) وتجاوبهم. ويكتسب هذا التمييز بين الترجمتين أهمية خاصة من الاختلاف الكبير بين أنواع النصوص التي ينظر فيها نيومارك.
وعليه فإن هذا الكتاب يعالج بصورة موسعة وشاملة مشكلات اللغة المجازية، ويقدم عدداً من الاقتراحات القيَمة للتعامل مع مثل هذه المشكلات ونظراً لخبرة المؤلف في تدريس الترجمة فإنه يعالج عدداً من الموضوعات التي تسهو عنها معظم الكتب الخاصة بالترجمة، وذلك مثل نقل أسماء الأعلام والعناوين، وترجمة نصوص ما وراء اللغة metalinguistic، تلك الأمور التي تعتبر –إذا استثنينا الشعر الغنائي- ربما اصعب أنواع النصوص في نقلها دون تعديلات في شكلها ومضمونها.
أما الجزء الثاني من الكتاب فاشتمل على معالجة عدد من القضايا مثل: الترقيم، وأساليب الترجمة، والترجمة الفنية الاصطلاحية، وعلاقة الترجمة بمهمة المترجم...
