يعد كتاب "منهاج الطالبين "للإمام محيي الدين النووي من أهم متون مذهب الإمام الشافعي المطلبي -عالم قريش– بل هو مدرسهم وعمدتهم، وعلى شروحه مع حواشيها وتقريراتها المعوّل في الفتوى وتحرير المذهب كما لا يخفى. ومع أهمية هذا الكتاب النفيس وكثرة فوائده، إلا أنه لم يحظ بما يستحقه من تحقيق وطبع أنيق مع كثرة تداول المطابع والطلبة له.
وأقدم طبعة المستشرق فان دين بيرج (Van Den Berg) في باتافيا (Batavia) سنة 1882م في3 مجلدات المتضمنة للمتن العربي مع ترجمة باللغة الفرنسية. وأكثر الطبعات اللاحقة للكتاب إعتمدت عليها إلا قليلاً.
وبين يدينا نسخة محققة من هذا الكتاب تم فيها الإجماع بتحقيق المتن. أما منهج التحقيق فقد كان على الطريقة المتبعة في تحقيق المخطوطات من مقابلة المخطوطات بعضها ببعض، لأجل الوصول إلى النص الذي وضعه مؤلفه أو قريب منه، وسلكت منهج إعتماد النص المختار، من مجموع المخطوطات والشروح، لأن ذلك هو الأنسب لخدمة الكتاب والقارئ، إذ الغاية من تحقيق الكتاب هو معرفة الحكم الشرعي على الوجه الصحيح، وأن تكون العبارة سليمة مبنى ومعنى، لذلك إستعرض المحقق المخطوطات نسخة نسخة، وكلمة كلمة، للوصول إلى النص السليم وإعتماده، ثم الإشارة إلى فوارق النسخ الأخرى.
كما رجع إلى كتب الشروح المطبوعة، وهي التحفة والنهاية، وشرح المحلي، ومغني المحتاج، بالإضافة إلى السراج الوهاج الذي جعلت نص المنهاج المطبوع في أعلى صفحاته متناً، إكتفى به من إعادة نسخه.
