يمكن اعتبار هذا النص مثالاً لتعدّد الأصوات في الرواية؛ فلهجائه تراوح بين العامّي الواسع من أرياف القصرين بالغرب التونسي إلى ريف قابس بالجنوب، مرورا بالفصحى ولغة الشارع كقاموس يقوم بذاته، أصوات ذوات متشظية مسكونة بالجنون والتهكم، بالثوريّة واللامبالاة، بالجديّة والسخرية، وأخرى ناطقة باسم الشهوة والاعتدال، الرغبة واحتقار الجسد، الفنّ والمتعة، شخصيّات تحمل لواء الدين والسكين، تتورّع بين خرجات التعبد وقضبان السجون، كلها أصوات وإن تغايرت أو ربا تناقضت فإنها تحيل على واقع مرير. يدفع بنا الزغباني إلى استرجاع وجع رحلةٍ تُغطي ما يناهز عقودًا أربعة من تاريخ تونس تبدأ في السبعينيات من القرن العشرين مع ارتجالية سياسات اقتصاديّة تحالفت مع قسوة الطبيعة، ففقرت الريف ودفعت بأهله إلى النزوح وإلى "استبدال فقر أبي بفقر ذليل".. ويبدو بطل الزغباني مورّعَا بين شخوص عديدة نحتت كيانه ظروف وعلاقات ووقائع، فكان تعبيرةً صادقة عن جيل استبطن آلام شعبه وتلبس بشخص الوطن، جيل حوّلته خيباته وآلامه وانكساراته إلى "عدمي ولا مبال حتى النخاع".
