تنبع ضرورة الحكاية - بكل أشكالها - من وظيفتها الهادفة لتعليم الطفل داخل الأسرة تعليماً واعياً ووجدانياً لقواعد الحياة وهدف الحياة، وضرورة الدفاع عن منطقته ومجاله وتعامله اللائق مع الجماعات الأخرى.
والمسرح هو شكل من أشكال الحكاية التي تعتمد في قصها الأسلوب الحواري. فمسرح الطفل – بشكليه: المقروء والمشاهَد - هو صنف درامي مسرحي يأخذ طابعه الخاص وهويته من وظيفته المتمثلة في تنمية الثقافة العامة، وزيادة الخبرات والمهارات والمعلومات، وتنمية الأخلاق، والارتقاء بأساليب التعامل مع المحيط، فضلاً عن ترسيخ التجربة وإغناء سمات شخصية الطفل. وما يميز مسرح الطفل ويطبعه بسماته المخصوصة هو خصوصية الغاية والجمهور المستهدف، ومن ثمَّ ما يفرضه ذلك من آليات الخطاب المخصوص.
وهذه المسرحية، تسعى في تكامل عناصرها إلى بناء طفل مثقف واعٍ، ومنحه بعض السعادة والبهجة والفرح، وزرع قيم ربما باتت مغيبة، وذلك من خلال إسقاط الطبائع البشرية على شخصيات من عالم الحيوان، ليتصف السنجاب بالحكمة، والقرد بالطمع، والغراب بإثارة الفتنة. لتؤول الأحداث في النهاية إلى انتصار الحب والخير دائماً على الشر والطمع والكراهية.
