الكتاب بأجزائه الثمانية هو من أهم كتب المقريزي، ومن أبرز كتب التاريخ المصري الوسيط، أتمّ به المقريزي سلسلة التواريخ المصرية بجمع وتسجيل أوسع ما وجد من المعلومات حول عصري الدولتين الأيوبية والمملوكية من سنة 577هـ حتى السنة التي سبقت وفاته سنة 845هـ.
وقد دوّن المقريزي في كتابه هذا حوادث كل عام في فصل مستقل يحمل عنوان ذلك العام، وختم الحوادث بذكر الوفيات، والترجمة لأصحابها في شيء من الاختصار المعتمد في الأرجح، وكثيراً ما كان يعمد في النصف الثاني من كتابه خاصة أن يفتتح السنة بذكر الوظائف الكبرى ومن يتولاها، وبخاصة إن وافق بدء السنة قيام سلطان جديد، وما يصحب ذلك-في العادة-من تغيير وتبديل بين موظفي البلاط السلطان وكبار الأمراء. وقد يكتفي المقريزي بعبارة افتتاحية في أصل ذلك السلطان وماضيه، ثم ينتقل إلى ذكر الحوادث والأخبار بترتيبها الزمني.
هو كتاب من أهم كتب المقريزي، ومن أبرز كتب التاريخ المصري الوسيط، أتم به مصنفه سلسلة التواريخ المصرية بجمع وتسجيل أوسع ما وجد من المعلومات حول عصري الدولتين الأيوبية والمملوكية من سنة 577 هجرية إلى السنة التي سبقت وفاته سنة 845 هجرية وقد اعتمد فيه عددا من المصادر السابقة، وقد ذكر المصادر التي نقل عنها وأشار إليها وهذه نسخة محققة، وقد أفردنا في آخرها مجلدا خاصا بالفهارس العلمية العامة للكتاب
