يدرس هذا البحث أُسس النظر الأصوليّ في نقد المتون الحديثية، وإلى الموازنة بين النظرين: الحديثيّ والأصوليّ، وبيان وظيفة كلٍّ منهما ومَدرَكه؛ بما يوضحُ أسس الخلاف بينهما وطبيعته، وأصوله وفروعه، ويعالج جملة إشكالات كلية من قبيل: ما طبيعة الخلاف بين المحدث والأصولي في نقد المتون؟ وهل يختلف منهج المحدّث في قَبول الأخبار عن منهج الأصوليّ؟ وما أوجُه الاختلاف بينهما في الحديث المردود وصفات الرد؟ وما مقاييس كلٍّ منهما في رَدّ المتون؟ بدأ هذا البحث بتمهيد يتحدث عن منهج القَبول بين المحدثين والأصوليين؛ لأن الردَّ يتأسس على القبول، تلاه بابان، كان الأول لمناقشة الحديث المردود وصفات الردّ بين المحدثين والأصوليين، أما الباب الثاني فكان لمناقشة مقاييس الرد من جهة المتن.
