اختار الشاعر خميس قلم عنوان "كرنفال الكتابة" لإصداره الشعري لأنه يدرك أن عتبة العنوان هي "دائماً تاج عتبات الكتابة" ولأن العنوان "مفتاح النص الذي يربط القارىء بنسيجه الداخلي والخارجي"، "وكرنفال الشاعر قلم يشتمل على مناخات كتابية متنوعة، ربما اراد الشاعر من تنوعها بحث رسالة مفادها أن الإجناس الأدبية قادرة على التآخي والإنسجام في كتاب واحد فيه تنفصل وتتصل ولكن لا يسطو واحد منها على الآخر ولا يقصي جنس أدبي جنساً آخر كما هو حال البشر اليوم.
تحت عنوان "الأسد العجوز" نقرأ للشاعر خميس قلم:
"أيها الأسد العجوز / مرحى لك / ما زلت على جبل مجدك / تُزار / وما زلت تهتف باسمك / كلّ الحشرات / ستسقط / وحيًّا سيتقاسمون لحمكَ / (...) / أيها العجوز الأسد ستبكي أيامك المجيدات الغابة / حين سيرث عرشك / كلبُ ضالّ / أو قطة مدللة". هكذا يبدو الشاعر خميس قلم ذو قدرة هائلة على تنصيص عالمه الكتابي؛ وجعله نصاً شعرياً دالاً يمكن قراءته باعتباره شاهداً على عصر مضى مثلما يمكن جعله مرآة لواقع عربي متحول بتجلياته الراهنة ونقده أيضاً.
تتوزع مادة الكتاب على أقسام تتفاوت في الشكل والحجم والموضوع منها السردي (أدخنته تتسامى) و الشعري (إي قاع) ومنها أدب الرحلة (إيماضات) ونصوص عاطفية (شريط لقبعة) ونصوص مفتوحة (صخب الألوان) وكان للطرفة ايضاً نصيباً وحضوراً في فلك (ثياب السخرية).
