هكذا ابتدأت بربارة نيومن كتابها والذي كان بعنوان "الوعد: حب وموت في بيروت"، وهو الكتاب الذي نستعرض صفحاته. وبربارة هي مراسلة تلفزيونية أميركية نشرت كتابها هذا قبل عدة سنوات وفيه حكت تفاصيل قصة علاقتها القصيرة ولكن الحميمة مع بشير الجميّل، وقد كشفت فيه دور الموساد وكذلك وكالة المخابرات المركزية الأميركية في تشجيعها على الاتصال به وتوثيق علاقتها معه لأغراض سياسية لا تخفى على أحد.
