رواية «مغامرات السنونو والأمازون» هي من الكلاسيكيات في أدب الفتية. وقد تُرجمت إلى غير لغة، واحتلت في إنجلترا المكانة ذاتها التي احتلها عمل مارك توين «توم سوير» في أمريكا، مما حدا بمؤسسة البي بي سي إلى إنتاجها في فيلمين وعدد من الحلقات المسلسلة، كان آخرها فيلم "Swallows and Amazons" المنتج حديثاً في عام 2016 . وتمثّل منطقة ليك ديسكريت الواقعة إلى الشمال الغربي من إنجلترا فضاء العمل الروائي الذي يستلهم مادته من ذكريات المؤلف ومغامراته. ويشير المؤلف إلى ذلك في مفتتح الرواية قائلاً: «يعود هذا العمل إلى أيام طفولتنا البعيدة، حين كنا نمضي، أنا وأخي وأخواتي، معظم عطلاتنا في مزرعة تقع أقصى جنوب كونسيتون، حيث نلهو ونلعب في البحيرة، ونمرح في التلال أو على قممها، فنصادف هناك المزارعين، ورعاة الماشية وصنَّاع الفحم ».
