قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى أربعة فصول، جاء الفصل الأول بعنوان الكتابة والتعبير، وفيه كلامه عن التعبير والإنشاء وعناصر التعبير، والكتابة والقراءة، والكتابة في المدارس، والكاتب والقراء، والخوف من الكتابة، وإدارة الوقت، والتفكير وحسن الاستماع. وختمه بتوجيهات للمبتدئين من الكتاب. وخصص الفصل الثاني لأجناس الكتابة وأنواعها، وما في ذلك من التعبير عن المشاعر، والكتابة الإنشائية-الوصفية، والكتابة التصويرية-التحليلية، والكتابة العلمية، وكتابة الملخصات، وكتابة القصة والرواية، وكتابة السير الذاتية، والكتابة في الاختبار. وتوقف الفصل الثالث عند تنظيم الكتابة، فبحث في الشكليات المتعلقة بالتخطيط للكتابة قبل البدء بها مع الاهتمام بأهدافها، واختيار الأسلوب المناسب والصياغة، ومراعاة الإملاء وعلامات التنقيط، وطريقة الاقتباس، والهوامش، وكيفية كتابة المقدمة والخاتمة، ثم المراجعة والطباعة، وأردف بالفصل نصوصاً تطبيقية. وختم بالفصل الرابع عن تعليم فن الكتابة، فأورد عدداً من الموضوعات، عن المعلم، وتعليم فن الكتابة، والتوجيه الكتابي، والتقويم الفني، والكتب المصورة والتعبير، وتعليم الكتابة الوصفية، وتعليم كتابة القصة، وكتابة الموضوعات الاجتماعية، وتعليم الكتابة الواقعية، واستخدام التشبيه في الكتابة، واستخدام طرق التعليم الحديثة. وأخيراً أفرد قائمة بموضوعات مختارة للكتابة.
