يمكن تعريف "الإعجاز العددي" بما يلي: لغة الأرقام هي عبارة عن عملية إرسال النظر في القرآن الكريم، وأخذ ألفاظ منه، ثم القيام بتعدادها، ليكتشف بعد ذلك أن من هذه الأعداد ما هو متساوٍ في عدد وروده فيه، وأنّ هناك شيئاً ما في هذا التساوي يراد إفهامه. وأما عن تاريخ هذا العلم، فإنه لم يتعرّض أحد ممن جمع وكتب في هذه الأمور لذكر تاريخ معين يرجع إليه بداية هذا العلم، على أن المؤلف عثر أثناء تتبعه على عدّة مرويات تدلّ على وجود سابقة لأمثال هذه العنايات، ترجع في تاريخها إلى الصدر الأول من الإسلام. أما عن زمن تداوله الفعلي. فقد طرح للتداول منذ عدة سنوات، وقد كتبت في تأييد هذا الاتجاه في الإعجاز، بحوث، وصدرت كتب كثيرة، تنوعت في اتجاهاتها، وفي طريقة تعاطيها معه، واختلفت، كذلك، في اختيار مداخله، وفي تحديد منطلقات البحث فيه، التي توصل إلى النتائج المتوخاة منه. فالموضوع إذن من الموضوعات الجديرة بالبحث المتعمق.
من هنا كانت انطلاقة البحث في هذا الكتاب، إذ أن المؤلف يعالج من خلاله بعض المناهج المطروحة اليوم، وهو فريد في بابه لحدّ الآن، بهدف مقاربة معجزة القرآن، وذلك من خلال بعض الطروحات، بأسلوب حديث، لعل حداثتها لم تتجاوز ربع قرن على الأكثر، كما يستظهر ذلك بملاحظة كلمات المؤلفين التي يسوقها المؤلف، بهذا الصدد. ينقسم البحث في هذا الكتاب إلى قسمين: الأول: في مناقشة هذا المبدأ مفهوماً وفكراً. الثاني: في مناقشة تطبيقاته، صوره، وأشكاله. والبحث على-صغره، جاء وافياً بالمطلوب، لجهة بيان وجوه هذا المنهج ومناقشته، وإعطاء المادة الكافية لمن يريد مُستَنَداً له في إنشاء حكم أو مرتكزاً لاتخاذ موقف في هذا المجال.
