مضمون هذه الرسالة فهو ختم على جامع الإمام الترمذي، من جملة ختوم الكتب الستة التي ألفها محدث الحجاز، وخادم الحديث النبوي في عصره المحدث العلامة الشيخ عبد الله بن سالم البصري (ت1134هـ)، وقد ضمن البصري هذه الرسالة: شرح الحديث الأخير من الترمذي، ثم شرع في الختم، وذكر فضل كتاب الترمذي، وشروحه، ومنزلته بين الكتب الستة، وشرطه، ورواته، وسنده المتصل به، وترجمة الترمذي نفسه، وأشياء أخرى، وختم كل ذلك بحديثين مناسبين لأن يختم بهما المجلس.
وكان مراعياً لأمانة التصنيف، ناسباً الأقوال إلى أصحابها، والفوائد إلى مصادرها، وكان يسير في ذلك كله على خطه مرسومة، ومنهج سوي، مما دل على تمرسه القوي بهذا الفن.
وأما عمل المحقق في الرسالة فقد عني أولاً بالتعريف بالبصري: اسمه ونسبه، ومولده ونشأته، وشيخه، وتلاميذه، وعقيدته ومذهبه، وآثاره، ثم وفاته وثناء العلماء عليه، وقد أغفل بعض النقاط المهمة في حياته خوف الإطالة، ثم تحدث عن كتب الختم وتعريفها، ونشأتها، ومراحلها التاريخية، وجهود البصري في كتب الختم، وذكر بعض ختوم الترمذي، ثم وصف النسختين اللتين اعتمدهما في تحقيق الرسالة.
ثم يلي ذلك نص الكتاب، وقد علق عليه بما يناسب من غير إفراط، وخرج نقولاته من مصادرها، وعرف ببعض الإعلان، وقابل بين النسختين لتصويب بعض الأخطاء.
