إن العلماء قد تفننوا في خدمة الحديث النبوي، وتدويِنه، والتأليفِ فيه، وسلكوا في التصنيفِ فيه مسالكَ متنوعة، ومن أنواع تأليفاتهم في خدمة السنة هو ما اشتهر أخيراً بكتب (الختم)، وهي كتبٌ يمليها الشيخُ على طلابه في آخر مجلس يتم فيه إقراء كتابٍ من كتب السنة أو السيرةِ أو نحوها، ويكون هذا المجلسُ فيما يتعلق بالكتابِ من حيث منهجُه، وشرطُه، ونحو ذلك مما يراه المؤلفُ مهما في ذلك، كما أن كثيراً منهم يتكلم على آخر حديث في الكتاب المعني سنداً ومتناً، كما التزمَ ذلك البصريُّ في جميع كتبه في الختم.
وهذه الكتبُ من المصادرِ المهمة في الكشفِ عن مناهجِ المحدثين في مؤلِّفاتهم التي تناولتها كتبُ الختم، وممن كانت له العنايةُ البارزةُ في هذا المجالِ هو العلاّمةُ عبد الله بن سالم البصري المكي (ت 1134هـ)، فقد ألفَ الختوم على الكتب الستة إضافةً إلى الموطأ للإمام مالك.
ومن هذه الختوم: ختمُه لسنن الإمام أبي داود السجستاني، والذي تقوم الأستاذ ومحمد النور ستاني بتحقيقه ونشرِه وهو من الكتب المهمّةِ فيما يتعلق بالإمام أبي داود ومنهجه في (سننه).
وقدم للكتاب، بمقدمة تشتمل على أربعة مباحث، وهي: المبحث الأول: "ترجمة المؤلف"، المبحث الثاني: "دراسة مختصرة للكتاب"، المبحث الثالث: "وصف النسخ المعتمدة في التحقيق"، المبحث الرابع: "منهجي في التحقيق".
وقد أرفق المؤلف كتاب من فوائد درس الشيخ "عبد المحسن بن محمد العباد البدر" في سنن أبي داود يليه دراسة عن رباعيات الإمام أبي داود في سننه مع مقارنتها برباعيات الإمام البخاري في صحيحه.
