فيليب فرانك (بالألمانية: Philipp Frank ) (و. 1884 – 1966 م) هو رياضياتي، وفيلسوف، وفيزيائي، وتربوي ، وأستاذ جامعي من النمسا، وألمانيا، ولد في فيينا، كان عضوًا في الأكاديمية الأمريكية للفنون والعلوم، توفي في كامبريدج، ماساتشوستس، عن عمر يناهز 82 عاماً.

إنه لمن المؤكد أنه كلما زاد تعمقنا في العلوم الحقيقية، كلما زادت الصلة وخصوصاً بين العلم والفلسفة، وكما يفهم من العنوان، فإن هذا الكتاب يعتبر أن فلسفة العلم هي الحلقة المفقودة التي يجب البحث عنها، وقد كان تقديم هذا المجال يبدأ دائماً من أحد مفاهيم العلم التي تتسم بالسوقية والغموض.
وفي مرات أخرى كان هذا التقديم يربط بين العلم وبين إحدى الفلسفات التي هي في واقع الأمر مجرد نظام لرموز منطقية لا تمس النظم التاريخية للفلسفة. غير أن هذه الفلسفات قد ساعدت على دعم أنماط الحياة، وخاصة العقائد الدينية والسياسية، ويحاول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب أن يبدأ من النمط الذي يكون العلم فيه مفهوماً للعالم وهو في أطيب حالاته الخلاقة والحاسمة في محاولة لترسيخ الصلات بالأنماط الفلسفية التاريخية، مثل مذهب المثالية ومذهب المادية، التي ساعدت في واقع الأمر على دعم العقائد الأخلاقية والدينية والسياسية.
يقدم الدكتور فيليب فرانك في هذا الكتاب الحلقة المفقودة لسد الفجوة بين العلوم والإنسانيات. وقد تتبع تاريخ العلم منذ أرسطو حتى أينشتاين لكي يظهر كيف كانت الفلسفة دائماً جزءاً من العملية العلمية. ولم تتفكك علاقات الألفة بين النظريات الفيزيائية والنظم الفلسفية إلا بمقدم التكنولوجيا الحديثة.
يحاول الدكتور فرانك أن يستعيد الفكر القديم للفلسفة من خلال كتابه هذا "فلسفة العلم". وهو يحث على أن يهتم رجل العلم في عالم اليوم بأفكار العلوم أكثر من أن يكتفي بمجرد الحقائق.
ويؤكد المؤلف من خلال كتابه على أهمية التحقق من أن العلم ليس إلا جزءاً من المجال العريض للسعي البشري.
