قد كان الناس قبل بعثة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في جاهلية جهلاء وضلالة عمياء، انحرفوا عن منهج الله سبحانه وتعالى، وضيعوا ما جاء به أنبياؤهم من الحق، فكان لا بد لعودة البشرية إلى الجادة من رسول يبين لهم الطريق، ويحدد لهم المنهج، فكان هذا النبي الذي أكرمنا الله عزّ وجلّ به.
ولما كان الإسلام دين الحق، جاء ليهدم الباطل والمفاهيم الخاطئة، ويقدم للناس منهجاً جديداً للحياة، فقد تخير للمفاهيم والقيم الجديدة التي دعا إليها ألفاظاً عربية واضحة تدل عليها، وجعلها مصطلحات إسلامية، تحمل المعنى الجديد الذي يريده الإسلام، فلا تلتبس بالمفاهيم القديمة التي ألفها الناس في جاهليتهم، فجاءت كلمات "الإيمان والكفر والإسلام والجاهلية والعبادة والصلاة والزكاة والحج والجهاد والشهادة..." وغيرها.
وقد كثرت حاجة الناس من قديم إلى تفسير معاني كثير من الكلمات في الكتاب والسنّة، فصنفت الكتب الكثيرة لهذا الغرض، كان من أشهرها "المفردات في غريب القرآن" للراغب الأصبهاني "والنهاية في غريب الحديث والأثر" لابن الأثير الجزري.
وقد أصبحت الحاجة في عصرنا هذا أكبر لتحديد معاني كثير من الكلمات التي انحرف معناها في أذهان الناس، فصاروا يقراونها ويفهمون منها معنى محدوداً أو مخالفاً للمقصود.
لذلك سعى هذا الكتاب الوقوف عند بعض الكلمات التي وردت في الكتاب والسنّة، واختارها الإسلام من الألفاظ العربية الأصيلة، وجعلها مصطلحاً إسلامياً، واستعملها لتدل على المعنى الجديد والفهم الجديد الذي أراده الله سبحانه وتعالى، بحيث لا تلتبس بالألفاظ التي حملت في الجاهلية معاني مغايرة ورصيداً بعيداً عما يريده الإسلام من أبنائه، فلكل لفظ ظلاله ورصيده في النفس، وليس من السهولة أن يتخلص منها.
