إن ما يسعى إليه المؤلف من إعداد هذه الموسوعة هو تقديم خدمة للقراء، لأن معظم كتب تفسير الأحلام المطبوعة تعاني من كثرة الأخطاء المطبعية والاختصار الشديد الذي يحذف الكثير من أوجه التأويل، أو تركها كما هي -كما كتبت قبل قرون- تحتضن الكثير من أوجه التأويل التي لم يعد لها موضوع أو واقع.
فكان أن قام في هذه الموسوعة بتصحيح الأخطاء وحذف هذه الأوجه التأويلية التاريخية، ثم قام بالجمع بين ما ورد في كتب المفسرين وأهل التأويل (سنة وشيعة وعارفين) من أوجه التأويل المتنوعة، لكي يجد كل قارئ على اختلاف مذهبه مبتغاه وتفسير رؤياه.
الأصول العامة للتعبير، على المعبر للرؤيا أن يكون عارفاً بأصول تعبير الرؤيا، ففي القرآن. مثلاً نجد المنافقين يشبهون بالخشب، وهذا ما جعل المعبرين يفسرون الخشب بالنفاق في الدين، أو تعبير النار بالحرب لقوله تعالى: (كلما أوقدوا ناراً للحرب أطفأها الله)... ثم تأتي السنة النبوية بعد ذلك، فهناك العشرات من الأحاديث التي تعتبر من أهم مصادر التأويل مثل قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (أحب القيد وأكره الغل، القيد ثبات في الدين) لذلك فقد فسر ابن سيرين الغل في الرؤيا بالخيانة والكفر.
بعد القرآن والسنة لا بد من معرفة اللغة من حيث اشتقاق الكلمات ومعانيها وأضدادها، لذلك نجد المعبرين يفسرون رؤيا النعناع بالنعي للاشتقاق، والسفرجل سفر... وكذلك معرفة الأمثال العربية والشعبية والأشعار المتداولة..
أصول أخرى اكتشفها علماء التعبير وهي مهمة وضرورية، يقول النابلسي: مثل أن يعرف أن القمح والشعير والتين والدقيق والعسل واللبن والصوف والحديد والملح والتراب ونحو ذلك أموال، وأن الفرس والأسد والذئب وسائر الوحوش والجبال والأشجار والطيور ونحو ذلك رجال، وأن السرج والأواني واللباس وإناث الطير والبهائم ونحو ذلك نساء..
وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة للفصول من صيف وشتاء وخريف وربيع، فرؤيا الفواكه أو المطر أو الثلج في أوانه يختلف عند التعبير إذ رؤى في غير أوانه... وعلى الأمثلة يقاس...
