إن التعلم هو مظهر الإنسان الخارجي وبناؤه الداخلي، وهو معيار تحويله إلى وجود إنسان شامل، والمعارف الإنسانية قد تزايدت وتراكمت في العصر الحديث تعجز معها البرامج التعليمية عن طرحها في برامجها، وبالتالي يجب على البرامج أن تطور من طرقها وأساليبها لتساعد كل فرد على التعلم في أي وقت وأي مكان بالإعتماد الأساسي على نفسه.
ويعد التعلم الذاتي سلاح إنسان العصر ضد قوة يتخيل أنه عاجز عن فهمها، هي قوة العلم والتكنولوجيا، وآلة نجاته عن الوقوع في براثن الإحساس بالضعف أو الإحباط أو الإكتئاب، مما يفجر قدرات الإنسان وطاقاته، حيث المستوى المرتفع للوعي والتغير الذاتي الذي يؤدي إلى نمو الشخصية الإنسانية.
ولأهمية هذا الموضوع، تناوله المؤلف في طيات هذا الكتاب فسلط الضوء على مفهومه وأهميته وسماته وأبعاده، وهذا ما تناوله الفصل كما عرض مبادئ وأنماط التعلم الذاتي في الفصل الثاني؛ أما الفصل الثالث نتحدث فيه عن دور الحقائب التعليمية والتعلم الذاتي، وخصص الفصل الرابع لأهمية إستخدام المودويلات التعليمية في مجال التعلم الذاتي، كما استعرض في الفصل الخامس أهمية التعليم الإلكتروني ودوره في التعلم الذاتي، أما الفصل السادس فقدم فيه المؤلف أسس التعليم المفرد والتعليم المبرمج؛ وتوقف المؤلف في الفصل السابع على مفهوم التثقيف الذاتي وأهميته وتطرق في الفصل الثامن والأخير على كيفية كتابة التعليقة، وهي مذكرة لتدوين ملاحظات منظمة في موضوعات معينة يظفهر بها المتدرب.
