فالفرد مهما كان عمره الزمني هو يتفاعل مع محيطه ويتعرض للإضطراب النفسي نتيجة ما يصادفه من صدمات وضغوطات وأزمات من محيطه وهو يحاول جاهداً التوافق معها للوصول إلى ما يسمى التوازن النفسي بينه وبين مجتمعه بواسطة ردود فعله النفسية والإنفعالية والسلوكية وحتى الذهنية.
ويتوقف نجاح هذا التوازن على نوعية شخصية الفرد ومدى تماسكها فهو إما أن يتخطى أزمته بنجاح أو يقع في الإضطراب النفسي ويحتاج إلى المساعدة والمتابعة ممن حوله لدفعه إلى تخطي هذا الإضطراب قبل أن يتمكّن منه ويوصله إلى المرض النفسي.
