لا شك ولا ريب أنّ النفس هي المحطة الرئيسية والمنبع الأصيل، الذي يزود الإنسان بالمعنويات، والتي تؤدي بدورها إلى رفاه الإنسان، ومتعته الذاتية، ولكن هذه النفس ترفد الكائن البشري بنوعين من المعنويات، فتارة يستلم منها وبطريقة خاصة معنويات أخلاقية؛ وذلك عند إتّباع منهج علماء الأخلاق ونصائحهم وإرشاداتهم، فيحصل التطهير من أوساخ الذنوب المتمثّلة بالحسد، والغيبة، والنميمة، وحبّ الدنيا...
وتارة أخرى يستلم الإنسان من هذه النفس نوع آخر من المعنويات، تجعله منسجماً ومتوافقاً مع المحيط الذي يعيش فيه، سواء كان ذلك في دائرة العمل، أو الأسرة، أو المجتمع بشكل عام، ويصطلح علماء النفس على هكذا حالة بالصحة النفسيّة.
فإذا كان الفرد مصاباً بالعصابات، فهذا معناه حدوث الإختلال في معنويات النوع الثاني، وبالتالي يكون هكذا إنسان إمّا مصاباً بالإكتئاب، أو الإنزواء، أو إنفصام الشخصيّة.
