هذا هو الجزء الثاني من "مذكرات الحرب" للجنرال الرئيس شارل ديغول الذي عرض فيه أحداث العامين 1943 و 1944، واطلق عليه اسم "الوحدة".
ولقد لقى هذا الكتاب الصدى المنشود، وحقق الكثير وبيد أن ذلك الصدى إنما كان في واقع الأمر، نتيجة المواقف الجليلة المشرفة التي اتخذها الجنرال الرئيس خلال العامين المنصرمين من قضية الحق العربي في فلسطين، والإعتداء الإسرائيلي على لبنان، ودفاعه الرائع الباسل عن ميثاق الأمم المتحدة، وتشدده الفريد في تحقيق العدالة الدولية، صوناً منه لأمن العالم وسلامه.
كانت تلك المواقف الأخيرة في سياق الحوادث التي شهدها الشرق الأوسط منذ انتصف عام 1967 إلى يومنا هذا، مصداقاً بين يدي هذه "المذكرات"، وما عاناه مؤلفها في ظلمات هاتيك الأيام، وتغلب عليه في الوقت نفسه، مع قصر نظر لدى حلفائه، وتخبطهم، وإضطرابهم، في زحمة الأهواء، والمطامع، والشبهات.
كان الجنرال الرئيس ديغول وحده، صافي الذهن، وكأنه يقف من الأحداث التي أسهم في توجيهها، خارج التيار التاريخي الذي جرف معظم القادة والساسة والزعماء الغربيين، أثناء الأربعينات من هذا القرن.
