ركز هذا الكتاب على جانبين رئيسيين هما البيئات الرئيسية للنباتات وتوزيعها على الكرة الأرضية وهي بيئة المياه العذبة والبيئة البحرية وبيئة مصبات الأنهر كبيئة تجمع بين البيئة المائية والبحرية، أما القسم الآخر فهو دراسة بيئة اليمن وتوزيع النباتات في هذا البلد حسب البيئات السائدة فيه، لما يتمتع هذا البلد من تنوع بيئي متباين من مناطق جبلية ممطرة إلى مناطق ساحلية إلى سهول ثم صحاري.
