هي تلك النظرية القائلة بأن ما على ظهر الأرض من كائنات حية لم توجد على هذه الصفة من أول الأمر ولا كان عددها بهذه الكثرة وإنما هي أنواع دائمة التطور والتغير نشأت من أصل حي واحد أو بضعة أصول قليلة يُفترض انها تولَّدت من المواد غير الحية تولداً ذاتياً ثم استمرت في التوالد والتغيّر تبعاً للظروف والأسباب المختلفة إلى أن وصلت إلى أشكالها الحالية التي لا تزال بدورها آخذة في التغيُّر تغيُّراً بطيئاً جزئياً محدوداً تابعاً للظروف الطبيعية أحياناً ولرغبة الإنسان أحياناً أخرى.
ولقد كانت هذه النظرية معروفة بشكل غير مهذب لدى الإغريق والعرب وغيرهم من الشعوب القديمة، إذ أنهم قد افترضوها إفتراضاً رغم أنه لم يكن لديهم ما يؤيدها من الإثباتات العلمية الحديثة، وربما كان ذلك دليلاً على بساطة هذه النظرية وعجزهم عن تفسير بعض الظواهر الكونية بدون الإلتجاء إلى فرض كهذا.
على أن نظرة واحدة إلى تاريخ هذه النظرية في عهدها العلمي يثبت لنا أنها ليست وليدة التعمل والإختراع وإنما هي نتيجة الطبيعية الوحيدة التي يجد الباحث المنطقي أنه قد وصل إليها فجأة بدون أن يكون هذا الوصول في رغبته أو في نيته.
