...فلما تحيروا عند سماع القرآن، وأدهشهم أسلوبه، نودي عليهم بالعجز عن مماثلته، بقوله تعالى :"فأتوا بسورة من مثله.."، ثم قال:"فإن لم تفعلوا ولن تفعلوا". ومعلوم أن النفوس الأبية إذا قرعت بمثل هذا استفرغت الوسع، فلما عدلوا إلى المحاربة والقتال، ورضوا بسبي الذراري وأخذ الأموال، عُلِمَ عجزهم، وهم معدن الفصاحة والبلاغة، والقرآن من جنس كلامهم، ولما أقدم مُقْدِمُهُم على معارضته نظر إلى السور القصار فعارضها، لأن تأليف الطِّوال تبين به الفصاحة الزائدة على الحد، فعارض سورة الفيل، فقال: الفيل، وما أدراك ما الفيل؟ له ذنب وثيل، وخرطوم طويل، وإن ذلك من خلق ربنا لقليل.وقال: يا ضفدع بنت ضفدعين، نقـِّـي كم تنقين، أعلاك في الماء، وأسفلك في الطين، لا الماء تكدرين، ولا الشراب تمنعين. وقال: من العجائب شاة سوداء تحلب لبنا أبيض. فظهرت فضائحهم بمثل هذا، ولو سكتوا لكان أصلح لهم.
