لم تكن المدة ، في تصوره ، کافية ، بيد أن الكاتب الأمريكي انطلق قدما التنفيذ مشروعه الذي كان يعتبره ضربا من المغامرة نظرا لما كان يتوقعه من عوائق إدارية وسياسية ( بسبب حداثة عهد المغرب بالاستقلال ، وكذا حوادث الريف ) وتقنية ، خاصة وأن الكهرباء لم یکن قد وصل إلى بعض المناطق النائية . رافقه في الرحلة صديق کندي هو کریستوفر وانكلين كان يملك سيارة من نوع فولسفاغن « خنفساء » ، ومحمد العربي الجيلالي الذي كان عونا لا بأس به لكونه مغربي يتحدث الدارجة ( وإن كان يجهل الريفية ) وسبق له أن عمل دليلا لسياح أجانب عبر بهم الصحراء وبعض الدول الإفريقية . قطع بول بولز في رحلة البحث عن الموسيقى 37 ألف کیلومتر ، متنقلا عبر القرى والمدن في الأطلس والريف ، ومتصلا بالسلطات المحلية التي لم تكن تنظر لعمله ، في غالب الأحيان ، بعين الرضى . ليس هناك من شك في أن مسعى الكاتب كان إيجابيا ، إذ أن من أبرز نتائجه أرشفة الموسيقى التقليدية المغربية والمحافظة عليها كما هي قبل أن تعصف بها رياح التغيير ، عن طريق تسجيل كافة ملامحها وتنويعاتها وآلياتها . توجد هذه المادة حاليا بمركز Americain Folk life Center لدى مكتبة الكونغريس تحت الأرقام التالية 11623 AFC 1960/001 : AFS .
