الإمام الشوكاني، مصنف هذا الكتاب هو محمد بن عليّ بن محمد بن عبد الله الشوكاني ثم الصنعاني، الإمام الأئمة ومفتي الأمة، بحر العلوم وسند المجتهدين الحفاظ، شيخ الإسلام، ترجمان الحديث والقرآن، قامع المبتدعين، وقاضي قضاة أهل السنة والجماعة، شيخ الرواية والسماعة، عالي الإسناد، السابق في ميدان الاجتهاد وُلِدَ سنة 1173هـ في بلده هجرة شوكاني وتوفي سنة 1250هـ. عرف والده في صنعاء بالشوكاني، نسبة إلى شوكان، ومنه أخذ الإمام الشوكاني لقبه. نشأ في صنعاء، وأخذ في طلب العلم وسماع العلماء الأعلام في سنٍّ مبكرة، وفرّغ نفسه للطلب والجدّ والاجتهاد. وقبل شروعه في الطلب كان كثير الاشتغال بمطالعة كتب التاريخ ومجاميع الأدب، ثم شرع في الطلب والسماع والتلقي من أفواه الرجال، إلى أن صار إماماً يشار إليه، ورأساً يرحل إليه. تفقّه على مذهب الإمام زيد وبرع فيه، وألف وأفتى حتى صار قدوة فيه. وطلب الحديث وفاق فيه أهل زمانه حتى خلع ربقة التقليد وتحلّى بمنصب الاجتهاد، وكانت له مؤلفات عديدة بلغت 114 مؤلفاً وهي جميعها مفيدة في فنون عديدة في الفقه والحديث والعقيدة. وغيرها من الفنون.
من هذه المؤلفات كتابه الذي نقلب صفحاته "الدر البهية" وهو عبارة عن متن فقهي نفيس، جرى فيه على طريقة فقهاء الحديث وقد جمع فيه أبوب الفقه بأوجز عبارة وأرفع مهارة، حتى أخرجه بهذه الحلة، قاصداً به نفع طلاب الفقه المبتدئين.
