التوحد عند الطفل هو اضطراب يصيب طريقة الطفل في التصرف، والتفكير، والإتصال، والتفاعل مع الأخرين، والأطفال التوحديون يتأثرون بطرق مختلفة، بعضهم عن بعض، فالبعض لديه أغراض خفيفة فقط، ويستطيع العيش بشكل مستقل، في حين يكون المرض أشد عند آخرين، ويحتاج الطفل في حالة التوحد الشديد للدعم المستمر طيلة الحياة من أجل العيش والعمل.
فالتوحد هو إعاقة متعلقة بالنمو عادة ما تظهر خلال السنوات الأولى من عمر الطفل، وهي تنتج عن اضطراب في الجهاز العصبي؛ مما يؤثر على وظائف المخ، وبقدر انتشار هذا الإضطراب مع الأعراض السلوكية المصاحبة له بنسبة 1 من بين 500 شخص. وتزداد نسبة الإصابة بين الأولاد عن البنات بنسبة 4,1، ولا يرتبط هذا الإضطراب بأية عوامل عرقية، أو اجتماعية، حيث لم يثبت أن لعرق الشخص، أو للطبقة الأجتماعية، أو الحالة التعليمية، أو المالية للعائلة، أية علاقة بالإصابة. ولعل تشخيص التوحد يعد من أصعب الأمور وأكثر تعقيداً، وخاصة في الدول العربية؛ حيث يقل عدد الأشخاص المهيئين يطريقة علمية لتشخيص التوحد، مما يؤدي إلى وجود خطأ في التشخيص، أو إلى تجاهل التوحد في المراحل المبكرة من حياة الطفل، مما يؤدي إلى صعوبة التدخل في أوقات لاحقة، حيث لا يمكن تشخيص الطفل دون وجود ملاحظة دقيقة لسلوك الطفل؛ ولمهارات التواصل لديه، ومقارنة ذلك بالمستويات المعتادة من النمو والتطور، ولكن؛ مما يزيد من صعوبة التشخيص كثيراً من السلوك التوحدي يوجد –كذلك- في اضطرابات أخرى. ومن هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليسد فجوة كبيرة في المكتبة العربية؛ حيث عمل المؤلف على تبسيط معلوماته وأعراض التوحد وأسبابه وعلاجه، ليكون بمقدور أية أسرة عربية أن تستفيد من هذا الكتاب، بغض النظر عن مستوى ثقافة أفرادها.
لذا ننصح بقراءة هذا الكتاب، وننصح بان لا يخلو بيت منه، وذلك لما هذا المرض من آثار وخيمة على المستقبل.
