لا بد من وضع ترتيب متسلسل يظهر الأحداث الحاسمة إذا ما أريد تعميق الفهم لظاهرة محددة، بل إكسابها صفة علمية معقولة، ولا بد - قبل ذلك - من رسم حدود واضحة المعالم تقيد الظاهرة وتمنحها محدودية تجعلها قابلة للفهم ضمن جهاز إدراكي ومعرفي قادر على تقديم رؤية منسجمة.
وهنا تكمن صعوبة الموضوع: فدراسة النقد العربي الحديث في فترة قرن من الزمان مع ما يشوب هذا النقد وما ينتابه من إشكاليات أمر صعب للغاية ما لم يتم التعامل معه برؤية خاصة مستمدة - على الأغلب - من هذا النقد نفسه.
فالنقد - أولاً - علم مرتبط بغيره (أي الأدب)، هذا إن تقرر أنه علم، وهو ثانياً - متعلق بالسياقات الفكرية والسياسية في تاريخ العرب الحديث، وهي أشد تعقيداً وتنوعاً وإختلاطاً، حيث تتوزعها إتجاهات متباينة ومختلفة تسمها بالغربة الزمانية - أحياناً - كما في حالة تأثير التراث، أو المكانية - أحياناً أخرى - الذي يستدعي فكراً آخر بالضرورة؛ كما في حالة تأثير الغرب، أو منقسماً بين الطرفين.
ويبقى الفكر العربي المعاصر - بعد ذلك - في حالة من الغياب والضياع والضبابية التي تسم وجوده بالتشظي وعدم الوضوح، مما يتعذر معه تحديد نسق منسجم للسِياقات الفكرية والنقدية أيضاً، ولعل بعض إشكاليات النقد يرجع إلى مادة النقد، أي الأدب الذي ينقسم أجناساً أدبية، ومراحل زمنية ومذاهبية أدبية وإتجاهات فنية متعددة ومتباينة، هذا بالإضافة إلى إعتماد النقد - أحياناً - على مجالات معرفية أخرى مثل علم الإجتماع والتاريخ وغيرها، في ظل هذه الإشكاليات كلها كان لا بد من وضع تحديدات ربما تضمن قدراً من الموضوعية والشرعية لموضوع الدراسة، وعلى أساس ذلك تم تحديد عنوانها بـ"إتجاهات النقاد العرب في قراءة النص الشعري الحديث".
