يمتاز لبنان بأنّه بلد قديم عابق بالشواهد التاريخيّة والآثار، وقد تمكّن علماء الآثار في العصر الحديث من إستخراج الكثير من الهياكل والكنوز والتحف القديمة التي تعود إلى حضارات عريقة من مواقع مختلفة، حتى قيل إنّه لو حفرت في أيّ مكان في لبنان ستجد بعضاً من تاريخ هذه الأرض الطيّبة الذي يعود إلى عصور الإنسان الأوّل ويتواصل حتى اليوم.
هذه الثروة التاريخيّة تتوزّع اليوم بين المواقع الأثريّة وبين المتحف الوطني والمتاحف المتخصّصة، وقامت المديريّة العامّة للآثار بالإشراف على إبرازها في الأقسام الرئيسة من المتحف الوطني، وفق التسلسل التاريخي وطبيعة هذه الآثار، من برونزيّات وفخّاريّات وذهبيّات ورخاميّات وزجاجيّات وعاجيّات وفسيفسائيّات ووثائق ومخطوطات وأدوات مختلفة.
ولا شكّ في أنّ المتحف اليوم، وبعد التوسعة والتجديد والإضافات من الآثار المكتشفة قد تحوّل مركزاً بالغ الأهمية، يقصده العلماء والمهتمون من اللبنانيين والأجانب للإطّلاع على هذه الشواهد من حضارات لبنان القديم، إنّ المتحف مرآة لثقافة المجتمع عبر التاريخ وهو يُسهم في إيجاد علاقة بين الأجيال المختلفة، من خلال إعتزازهم بتراثهم الحضاري.
هذا الكتاب يتوجّه إلى الناشئة واليافعين الذين يزورون المتحف أو الذين يريدون الإطّلاع على آثار لبنان القديم والتعرّف إلى كنوزه، وهو يقدّم المعلومة التاريخيّة بصياغة مبسّطة، وبربط تاريخي يثير إهتمام القارئ ويدفعه إلى المتابعة والمزيد من الإطّلاع المعمق، إنّه دليل من خلال القصّة التاريخيّة للبنان القديم، وهو ليس البديل عن المعلومات التي يقدّمها الكتب والأدلة المتخصّصة.
