التعبير رمز ينعش الفكر ويوقظه، أياً كاتن وسائطه، وللفلسفة أيضاً وسيطها وهي اللغة، بشكلها المحسوس، ولأن لكل محسوس حدود وسعة، لهذا تكون اللغة أعجز من أن تحمل الفكر المعقول الذي يستند عليه تعليم الفلسفة.
ولما كانت الفلسفة في طبيعتها "فكر" فهو بلا حدود، آفاقه أبعد من ان تحاصره اللغة، فما من لغة مهما بلغ غناها تستطيع أن تعبّر عن كل ما نفكر به، لذلك اتخذت الفلسفة لذاتها منهجاً بُنيت قاعدته على الحوار والنقاش النقدي.
ولعل النقاش الذي كان يثيره سقراط ليولد منه الأفكار ويستنبط من خلال أسئلته النقاشية إجابات وحقائق تأثر بها أفلاطون الذي عبّر عن أفكاره بأسلوب الحوارات.
هكذا نشأت المحاورات في الفلسفة القديمة كأنجح وسيلة للتعبير في رحلتها الإستكشافية والبحث عن الحقيقة.
والحوارات أسلوب يوقظ الفكر وينبش في خبايا المعرفة وجذورها، وهذه القوة الإيقاظية للفكر هي الوظيفة لكل إبداع بشري، والمحاورة في طبيعتها قد لا تقدم حلولاً نهائية لمشكلة تثيرها، بل في أغلب الأحيان تنتهي إلى نتيجة تبدو فيها مُداعبة للفكرة على الطريقة السقراطية، تتوالد فيها مصطلحات غايتها في ذاتها، أو مشاكسة ملاعبة بالفكرة على طريقة "بروتاغورسية" سفسطائية، وفي ممارستها تتشكل خير أنواع التعابير بمفردات لغوية تُطرز ثوباً فنياً جميلاً تلبسه شأنها شأن الشعر، تراقص فيه الحقيقة وتحاكيها، وعلى الإيقاع تتلمس كل جوانبها وتلاحق كل عناصرها، ولا تقف حد ظاهرها، بل تَمْخُر في عباب لبّها لتثير العقل، وعلى نغمات الموسيقى تبدأ رحلة البحث عنها.
