يشكل كتاب "الشيخ علي جنبلاط" (ولد - 1691- توفي 1778) حلقة في إطار سلسلة تناولت الشخصيات القيادية البارزة للأسرة الجنبلاطية في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر، وهو الكتاب الثالث الذي يصدر بعد كتابين للمؤلف الدكتور رياض غنام هما: "الشيخ بشير جنبلاط" و"سعيد بك جنبلاط"، فمع الشيخ علي يبدأ الدور السياسي الفعال للزعامة الجنبلاطية في بلاد الشوف، وبه تبرز الزعامة المقاطعجية كما برزت في سائر الأسر الحاكمة...
وفي هذا الكتاب، يتتبع الدكتور رياض غنام في بحثه خطى هذا الشيخ المؤسس للزعامة الجنبلاطية، فيدفق في نسب الأسرة قبله ومعه ومع ابنه رباح، ويُوضح ظروف المصاهرة مع آل القاضي وملكيته لتركته العقارية.
ويُحلل بعمق صراع العصبيات على السلطة، ودور الشيخ علي جنبلاط المؤثر في الإمارة الشهابية، فيتوقف عند دوره مع اهل جبل عامل، وعلاقته مع الرهبانية الحلبية والبلدية، وموقفه من دير مشموشة وصلاته مع الفاتيكان، كما يبرز قدرة الشيخ في إدارة عهداته وصفات الزعامة لديه على الصعيدين الديني والزمني.
إن محاولة وضع كتاب عن الشيخ علي جنبلاط، هي بالنسبة للبناني بمثابة وضع كتاب عن تاريخ الإمارة الشهابية في مرحلة أمرائها الأوائل، حيدر وملحم ومنصور وأحمد ويوسف والشيخ علي، وهو تاريخ امتد لأكثر من نصف حياة الإمارة الشهابية، حفلت بأحداث ووقائع كانت على درجة كبيرة من الأهمية.
ومن هنا، تأتي أهمية وضع تلك الشخصيات الرائدة في تاريخ السلاسة الجنبلاطية بين يدي القراء.
