يضم هذا الكتاب أربعة عشر فصلاً من أصل سبعة وعشرين بحثاً مختاراً قُدّمت في المؤتمر الرابع لقضايا التحوّل الديمقراطي في الوطن العربي (تونس، 12-13 أيلول/سبتمبر 2015)، بعنوان "العنف والسياسة في المجتمعات العربية المعاصرة"، وتناولت العنف في الدولة الحديثة والمجتمعات المتحوّلة وفي المجال السياسي العربي وفي الحراك الديمقراطي، إضافة إلى بعض الحالات العربية، مثل دول المغرب العربي ومصر وسورية واليمن، محاولة الإجابة عن بعض التساؤلات في شأن ظاهرة العنف وارتباطها بالسياسة والمجتمع.
يتبع هذا الجزء (الأول) المعني بالمقاربات السوسيولوجية وبعض الحالات، جزء ثانٍ (13 فصلاً) يُعنى بثنائية الثقافة والخطاب.
