تستند هذه الدراسة في معظمها إلى المصادر الغربية التي تتناول العلاقات التجارية بين الأتراك والبنادقة في الحقبة التي شهدت تنامي الإمارات التركية في الأناضول (ومن جملتهم العثمانيون) إلى أن سقطت القسطنطينية بيد السلطان محمد الثاني سنة 1453م، لعبت التجارة الخارجية دوراً هاماً منذ البداية، أي منذ نشوء الإمبراطورية العثمانية، وما من شك أن طموح الحكام العثمانيين للسيطرة على الطرق التجارية العالمية كان إلى حد ما أحد الأسباب التي دفعتهم إلى التوسع ويعرض هذا الكتاب لأصناف السلع التي كانت محور التبادل التجاري بين العثمانيين والجنوبيين، وأهمية هذه ا لسلع ودور الاستثمارات الجنوبية ومدى تأثير ذلك في نشوء الدولة العثمانية وارتقائها.
كانت التجارة الخارجية عنصراً بالغ الأهمية استفاد منه العثمانيون في إرساء قواعد إمبراطوريتهم. تركز مؤلفة الكتاب كات فليت في بحثها على العلاقات التجارية التي كانت قائمة بين التجار الأوروبيين ونصرائهم المسلمين في الحقبة التي واكبت نشوء الإمبراطورية العثمانية سنة 1300م، حتى سقوط القسطنطينية سنة 1453م.
تعتمد الكاتبة في بحثها على مصادر لاتينية وتركية لم يسبق أن استثمرها الباحثون من قبل وتبين اثر التواصل التجاري بين ألأتراك والجنوبيين في تنمية اقتصاد الدولة العثمانية الفتية وتوسعها الجغرافي.
يسلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على التوجهات الاقتصادية للدولة العثمانية التي كان من نتائجها التكامل الاقتصادي بين الدولة العثمانية ومنطقة حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وذلك بخلاف الأبحاث السابقة التي ركزت على الجانب العسكري لتلك الدولة الفتية والخطر الذي كانت تمثله كدولة معادية للغرب المسيحي.
يمتاز الكتاب بسلاسة النص وجدة المادة إلى جانب كونه مرجعاُ يعتد به بالإضافة إلى أنه يلقي الضوء على حقبة مبهمة من تاريخ الأتراك العثمانيين.
