يأتي العلمُ - دائماً - بعد أزمةٍ تُجبر العلماء على طرح الحلول المُسعفة، ولكي يصل العالِم إلى تلك الحلول، فإنّه يحتاجُ منهجاً علميّاً يتّبعه كوسيلةٍ لبلوغ هدفِه، وكلّ منهج علميّ يتكوّن من مراحل ثلاث: فالأساسُ هو جمع المعلومات الكاملة المتوفرة التي تساعدنا على حل المشكلة بوساطة علميّة (الإستقراء)، يلي ذلك ترتيب هذه المعلومات المجموعة وإجراء مقارنات بينها بوساطة عمليّة (التّحليل)، والمرحلة الأخيرة هي التوصل للحلول عن طريق (تفسير) نتائج التّحليل.
وإذ كان هذا الكتاب يتناول بالدّراسة "المنهج العلمي الذي اتّبعه العلماء الكوفيّون في إستقراء مادّتهم اللّغويّة"، فقد كان لزاماً أن يتعرّض - في البدء - لتاريخ النّحو العربيّ، والأطوار التي مرّ بها في القرون الثلاثة الأُوَل، فتحدّث عن: طور (الوضع والتّكوين) الّذي أنتجت فيه البصرة النّسخة الأوّلية أو النّموذج الأوّليّ للنّحو العربيّ، وطور (النّموّ والنّضج) الذي وُضِعَتْ فيه تلك النسخة الأوّليّة للنّحو العربي أمام علماء العربيّة من البصريّين والكوفّيين، فقام كلّ فريقٍ بتطويرها حسب المعارف التي يختزنها وحسب تأثير هذه المعارف على طريقة ومنهج تفكيره، لنجد أمامنا أنموذجين معدّلين أو مطوّرين عن النّسخة الأولى للنّحو العربيّ، وهما: النموّج النّحويّ البصري، والنّموذج النّحويّ الكوفيّ.
