وضع جوني كتاب مذكراته هذا بعد مرور أربع عشرة سنة على تجربة هذه في الإقامة بين الفدائيين الفلسطينيين. كتبه بعد انقطاع عن الأدب دام أكثر من عشرين سنة. وبهد فترة يسميها هو نفسه "حضانة طويلة" إذ كانت إقامته هذه بين الفلسطينيين قد عزلته عن أوروبا تماما بحيث يصرح في هذا كتاب بأن أوروبا بكاملها صارت لا تزن لديه أكثر من .... أصغر فدائي، فإن كتابة "أمير عاشق" ستشكل له هي الأخرى عزلة رابعة وانقطاعا كليا : "كل ما لم يكن هذا الكتاب صار بعيدا /عني/ حتى ما عاد يرى"، و مذكراته هذه التي تشكل استبطانا حميميا ونقديا لتجربة الفلسطينيين و محيطهم العربي و العالمي وإعادة خلق شعرية للفضاء وساكنته، ومراجعة لحياته بكاملها على ضوء المحطة الفلسطينية التي كان هو يحدس نظرا لتقدمه في العمر، أنها ستكون محطته الكبرى الأخيرة. هذه المذكرات يدعونا هو بالحرف الواحد إلى أن نقرأها كتحقيق صحفي أو "روبرتاج" وفي ما وراء ما تشي به هذه الدعوة من تواضع كبير، فلعلها تسمي نبر الكتاب و مسعاه، التأريخ لتجربته عيشت يوما بعد يوم، تاريخا يمنح الكلام للآخر بدون أن يعمل على تأويله بإفراط أو مصادرته.
