تنفجر الأحداث وتنتظم في هذه المسرحية حول العديد من المجموعات: مجوعة سعيد وأمة وزوجته ليلى، ومجموعة المومسات بقيادة وردة ومجموعة المعمرين ومجموعة الجيش الفرنسي. من خلال هذه المجموعات يطرح الكاتب قضايا الحب والعنف والحرب وعالم الموت. إن السواتر الورقية هي التي تحدد اللعبة المسرحية وهي التي تعطيها عنوانها، وبفضلها أصبح الفضاء مسرحا للحدث حيث يرسم الممثلون الأمكنة التي يحتاجونها، وحيث يصبح المشهد مسرحا للحلم و الذاكرة و الواقع. ينفذ جان جوني كل الأبعاد الجمالية للمسرح، إنه يؤكد على الديكور الذي يمكن من موضعة الشخصيات، وعلى اللباس الذي يكون في حد ذاته ديكورا. لقد أراد للشخصيات أن تكون ذات أقنعة أو تستعمل على ألأقل الماكياج بشكل مبالغ فيه وأن تؤدي حركات رائعة. تشكل السواتر قمة عطاء جان جوني المسرحي، لأنه حاول إنشاء مسرح له قوة الانفجار الحدثي المعيش الذي يمتد من عالم الأحياء إلى عالم الأموات ثم إلى عالم الأحياء الذين سيأتون. هذه آخر مسرحية كتبها جوني وقد قدمت على خشبة مسارح عالمية وبصيغ مختلفة في برلين ولندن وستوكهولم ثم في باريز التي تأخرت في عرضها للمسرحية بسبب صورة المعمر الفرنسي المثيرة التي تقدمها، وهي صورة دقيقة مشبعة بالدراما الساخرة التي تستحضر المستعمر بمفارقاته وتناقضاته وادعاءاته، صورة تنطبق على الاستعمار في أشكاله القديمة، وأيضا في الشكل الذي يأخذه في زمننا.
