يشتمل هذا الكتاب على شرح مستفيض لرسالة الشيخ زكريا الأنصاري "اللؤلؤ النظيم في روح التعلم والتعليم". والتي هي مزيج من المصنفات التراثية القديمة الخاصة بموضوع تصنيف العلوم، غير أن ما يميزها هو أن مؤلفها قد سلك فيها مسلكاً فريداً في ترتيبه للعلوم غير مسلك السابقين، حيث قسم العلوم إلى شرعية، وأدبية ورياضية، وعقلية، وهو بهذا التصنيف يتبع معنى تصنيف الفارابي، إلا أنه تأثر تأثيراً كبيراً بابن الأكفاني: فمقدمته في شروط التعليم والتعلم مختصرة من كتاب إرشاد القاصد، ثم إن جل تعاريفه مقتبسة أو مأخوذة من كتاب ابن الأكفاني، وهكذا جاء كتابه شاملاً حاوياً لجميع العلوم المعروفة في عصرنا وحاوية العديد من الفوائد والآداب الضرورية التي يحتاجها الطالب في طلبه للعلم.
