يُحْكى قَديمًا أنَّ بَغْداد كانَتْ نُقْطَةَ التِقاءِ الشَّرْقِ بِالغَرْب، وَأنَّ القَوافِلَ التِّجارِيَّةَ كُلَّها كانَتْ تَمُرُّ في هذه المَدينَةِ الغَنِيَّةِ بِأسْواقِها، والّتي تَضُجُّ بِالحَياة. وكان من بين التجّار في هذه المدينة، همّام، الذي اشتُهر بالطمع، إذ كان يملك أربعين جملًا، وعندما يقصد أيّ مدينة أخرى لبيع ما لديه من بضائع، كان يبيع فقط ولا يشتري، فيعود إلى بغداد مع جِماله الأربعين غير محمّلة بأيّ مشتريات. وفي يومٍ من الأيّام، وبينما كان همّام عائدًا من الهند، ولدى وصوله إلى الصحراء قبيل بغداد، التقى بعجوزٍ طلب منه ماءً فسقاه. عندئذٍ، قال العجوز لهمّام: أريد أن أعقد معك صفقةً، أنت تملك جمالاً لا تحمل شيئًا، وأنا أعرف مكان كنزٍ كبيرٍ قريبٍ من هنا، ما رأيك إن جلبنا الكنز وحمّلناه على الجمال، فتعطيني عشرين جملًا وتأخذ أنت عشريناً؟ هل سيوافق همام؟ ماذا سيحصل يا ترى؟
