يُعدّ محمد الثبيتي أيقونة الشعر الحديث في المملكة العربية السعودية، بعد صراع بدأ ببداية قيام الدولة السعودية ولم ينتهِ، عبر أجيالٍ حاولت أن تشقًّ طريقاً للأجيال القادمة، بدأ الثبيتي كلاسيكياً، وارتبط بالتراث منذ بداياته، مما أثرى معجمه الشعري بمفردات الأرض والصحراء والبداوة، لكنّه أعلن، رغم ذلك، عن أفق مختلفٍ من خلال مقدمة ديوانه الأول، فكان الديوان الثاني منعطفاً في تجربة الثبيتي الشعرية، بلغ به التجريب حدّاً وصل بجملته الشعرية حافة الغموض أو كاد، وفي زمنٍ قياسيٍّ تتطور تجربة الثبيتي، بين ديوانيه الأولين وديوان "التضاريس"، الذي وجدت فيه حركة الحداثة الشعرية في المملكة ضالّتها، عبر تجربة مدهشة بلغت فيه القصيدة الحديثة في المملكة إلى ذرى لم تصلها من قبل، فكان ديوان "التضاريس" نقطة فاصلة بين مرحلتين، وكان هذا قدر الثبيتي دائماً.
