كان ابن عمي قد أعطاني ظهره ، وخطا ناحية قبو المقبرة الغربية تغوص قدماه في لحم الميتين ، الذي أصبح بمرور السنين بنيا تذروه الريح. على عتبة الدار ، تحت السراج المطفأ المعلق في العقد المتآكل ،تجلس عمتي "مريم". عندما أحسنت بي وضعت كفها على جبهتها وتأملتني لحظة ثم قالت:"ها أنت قد جئت". ولما سألتها عن أخي خفقت عيناها الكليلتان وقالت بدون أن تنظر ناحيتي :"كلهم هناك" وأشارت بيدها ناحية المغارب ،ثم أردفت "يبنون المقبرة". مرت لحظة صمت و أنا واقف أطل عليها .كومة من عظام ،أسمعها تقول لنفسها "الدوام لله،والأمر لصاحب الأمر". رأيتها تغيب عني ،تتأمل تيار الماء الجري في النهر الصغير أمام الدار. أقف في الممر الذي يفصل بين المقابر،أتأمل أبا الهول البارك فوق ظهورها ، وأشم رائحة الرماد. شواهد من رخام مطموسة اللمعة تحمل أسماء من رحلوا. عمي الكهل يجلس القرفصاء بجانب المقبرة،يشد ذيل ثوبه من بين فخذيه ويطل شعر صدره الأشيب من فتحة الجلباب . يكسب على رأسه طاقية من صوف الغنم ،وبصعوبة مسح عن جبهته التراب .تأملت جلد رقبته المكر مش وتفاحة آدم بارزة خطوط من تجاعيد متقاطعة كالمصير. عندما رآني حاول النهوض ،لكنني شددت على يديه أن يبقى . كان صامتا كبيت مهجور ،ينظر وقد حفرت الدموع مسارين على وجهه وسط غبرة الرماد. قال: -حتى العظام تحمل ملامحها. سقط رأسه على صدره،وسمعت نشيجه يعلو في المكان.
