تقف كثير من المهيمنات الرمزية اليوم حائلاً دون نقد بعض البناءات الرمزية السياسية والدينية في مجتمعاتنا، كأن تحاصر هيئات تأثيمية اجتماعية الوعي الذاتي الفردي، جراء نقد ما، يطال سلطة الأب الروحي أو ابن الأب الروحي أو تلك الحركة المنطوية على مصيرية تمثيلها لطائفة ما، فيتراجع مسعى الحرية هنا لحساب معنى إرثي مديد، يَنسبُ للناقد أو الباحث بصورة صريحة نعت المروق أو التجديف أو الإساءة. لكن في مقابل ذلك يتفهم مفكرون في أوروبا حجم ما سببته الرسوم لعالم المسلمين، ذلك؛ "أن أي تصوير أو رسم لشخص النبي يعتبر من المحرمات في الإسلام، لاسيما إذا كان هذا الرسم كاريكاتوراً مشوهاً ومشيناً." لابد من معرفة الواقع الثقافي الذي يؤكد بلاغة التغاير في النظر إلى الرسالة المبثوثة بين مجتمع وآخر. فقراءة أي رسم يعتمد بالضرورة على تاريخ المجتمع وكيف يستخدم مجتمع ما هذه الإشارات أو تلك فيه ضمن سياقات محددة لانتاج المعاني الايحائية. وعليه فأن هذه الرسوم بتعبير جيل كيبيل تشويه مدان: "إنه لمفهوم ومتوقع أن يشعر المسلمون بالصدمة من جراء تصوير نبيهم على هذه الشاكلة. وإذا كان بعض المسلمين إرهابيين متطرفين ـ وهو السبب الذي يقف وراء تلك الرسوم ـ فهذا لا يعني أن كل المسلمين إرهابيون متطرفون! هذا تعميم مستعجل ومغرض.
