رشّ وجهه بالماء البارد، نظر إلى انعكاس صورته في المرآة، وقطرات الماء تتراقص على وجهه… ابتسم لنفسه، واتسعت ابتسامته حين خطر له أنه لن يقف في طابور؛ لينظف فمه بفرشاة الأسنان، ولن يقف في طابور آخر؛ ليتبوّل، وفي طابور ثالث؛ ليأكل… ما أجمل الحرية.
خرج عادل من غرفته كطفل رضيع، بدأ يتلمس ويكتشف الأشياء زحفًا، ما أجمل الحياة! وما أنظفها! وصل إلى المركز التجاري، وبمجرّد دخوله كاد يبكي، ربّما هذا هو شعور الطفل حين يخرج من رحم أمّه، إنه بكاء الخروج إلى النور والحياة بعد شهور من العيش في الرحم، أو بعد سنوات من العيش في العدم".
رواية مكتوبة بذكاء وجرأة كبيرين، تعتمد عنصر التشويق وسرعة الإيقاع، حاول مؤلفها أن يحطم كل القيود والمحرمات. ما يميز كتابة الزعابي هو المشاهد التصويرية التي يعتمدها حيث يتمكن القارئ من تشكيل الشخوص في مخيلته بكل وضوح ويشعر أنه يتابع فيلم سينمائي!
