على قمة جبل الأولمب كان الإجتماع السنوي للآلهة، وكانت كل الآلهة حاضرة، لم يتغيب منها أحد سوى إليثويا، وكان زيوس متربعاً على عرشه وإلى جانبه تجلس هيرا، وحدث أن نشب خلاف بين أثينا وأفروديت حول ما إذا كانت الحكمة أفضل من الجمال أم أن الجمال أفضل من الحكمة، واحتدم الخلاف بينهما إلى درجة أن وجه أفروديت الأبيض تحول إلى اللون الأرجواني من شدة الغضب وقد ثارت ثائرتها وتشنجت كل عضلة من عضلات وجهها وأخذت تشوح بيديها، أما أثينا فقد حافظت على هدوئها واقترحت أن يحتكموا إلى زيوس، فاقترح زيوس أن يعقد بينهما مسابقة".
