يقف الكاتب الأرجنتين "إرنسو ساباتو" في هذه الأحاديث التي أجراها معه محاور متمكن وعالم قدير، يعرف إنتاج الكاتب وشخصيته حق المعرفة، وجهاً لوجه، أمام معالم رئيسة من سيرة حياته وإنتاجه الفكري، وخلال إحدى عشرة جولة من الحوار الدافئ والحاسم والعميق يتفحص ساباتو، ويتصدى، لمجموعة من المسائل التي يعتبر قاسمها المشترك إشكالية الإنسان المعاصر على المستوى البياني والمفاهيمي: الإبداع الأدبي، والنحو وعلم اللغة، والتربية والدكتاتورية، والفن والرسم والعلوم الماورائية والشباب والتانغو...الخ.
إن الجوهري في تفكيره والمسائل الكبرى التي أقلعته طيلة حياته ريبته ورفضه وحقائقه وأفضلياته وهواجسه كل ذلك يقاس بالوتيرة الحسية لسيرة حياته، كما أن المناخ الـ "سقراطي" الذي أضفى على هذا الحديث، يباغت القارئ ويشده إلى دروب عالم ساباتو الغربية، غلى جاذبية واحد من أكبر الشخصيات في عصرنا.
ولد "إرنستو ساباتو" في بلدة روخاس التابعة لمحافظة بونس أيرس في العام 1911. وحصل على الدكتوراه في العلوم الفيزيائية والرياضية من جامعة "لاباتا"، وعمل في حقل الإشعاعات الذرية في مخبر "كوري" في فرنسا، ثم في معهد "ماساشو ستيس" للتكنولوجيا في بوسطن-الولايات المتحدة الأميركية.
في العام 1945 هجر العلوم بصورة نهائية ليكرس وقته للأدب وكتب عدة أبحاث حول الإنسان وأزمة العصر، وثلاث روايات، هي: "النفق" عام 1948، "أبطال وقبور" عام 1961 و"أبدون" عام 1967. ونالت روايته الأخيرة في باريس جائزة أفضل رواية أجنبية في فرنسا في ذلك العام.
عندما استعادت الأرجنتين الحياة الديمقراطية في العام 1983ـ كلفته الحكومة الدستورية برئاسة اللجنة الوطنية للتحقيق في قضية المفقودين نتيجة القمع السياسي أثناء حكومات الطغمة العسكرية، وقد قدمت تلك اللجنة تقريراً عن نتائج أعمالها كان له وقع مثير.
في العام 1948 نال "سلباتو" جائزة "ميجيل دي سرفانتس". وهي أرفع جائزة للآداب الإسبانية.
