هذا الكتاب يقدم تعديلاً في النظرية اللغوية السوسيرية الشائعة في الألسنية الحديثة: وهي النظرية القائمة على ثنائية " اللغة / Language والكلام / Speech "؛ وذلك بفرض عنصر ثالث هو ما سمي في الأطروحة بالعرف الغوي؛ وهو عنصر يجمع في بنيته بين الذهنية الجمعية (اللغة) والحسية الفردية أو الجماعية (الكلام).
وكان الإنطلاق إلى هذا الفرض من مسوغات عدة ذكرت في المقدمة، من أبرزها أن ظواهر السياق الموقعية تأتي لحل مشكلات تطبيق النظام (اللغة) على الكلام، وهذا يعني أنها لا تنتمي إلى أي منهما؛ ضرورة أنها تحل مشكلات التعارض بينهما، ومن هنا كان اقتراح عنصر ثالث يُعد مرجعية لهذه الظواهر؛ فكانت مقولة "العرف اللغوي".
إن مقولة العرف اللغوي تقوم – فيما تقوم عليه – على مقاصد لغوية ثقافية تمثّل قيم اللغة الكبرى، ومن هنا كان لا بد من الكشف عن هذه القيم، وتم ذلك من خلال اللغة العربية. كما أن هذه المقولة تشكل – بحسب الأطروحة – عنصراً من عناصر الإتصال الشهيرة، فيصبح عدد العناصر بعد إضافة المقاصد والعرف ثمانية عناصر، وهذا تعديل آخر تقدمه الأطروحة يتعلق بالأنموذج الجاكبسوني في الإتصال اللغوي.
وإن هذا الكتاب يطمح بما يحويه من "رؤية مزدوجة" لغوياً وثقافياً، ومنهج مقاصدي قيمي، وتنوع في المجالات المعرفيةي التي يبني عليها؛ إلى فتح طريق جديد في خارطة الدراسات السانية نحو ما أسميته "علم اللغة الثقافي"، فعسى أن يُبلّغ رجاءه، وإلا فقد حاز شرف المحاولة الصادقة.
