الكاتب المصري المعروف مصطفى لطفي المنفلوطي (1876- 1924) الذي يُعدّ رائداً للمقالة القصصية في الأدب العربي الحديث، إذ تتوافر العناصر القصصية في أغلب مقالاته الذي يضمًّها كتابه (النظرات).
فضلاً عن تجسيد هذه المقالات قضايا إجتماعية وإنسانية مهمة عاصرها في مجتمعه، وعناية الكاتب فيها بالأسلوب وأداء المعاني أداءً فنياً بديعاً، وهذا كلّه جعل هذه المقالات تحظى بإقبال القُرّاء من مختلف المستويات عليها في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، لكن ممِّا يُؤسَف له الموقف السلبي لبعض الباحثين والدارسين من المنفلوطي، إذ يرونه كلاسيكيّاً انتهى عهده؛ لأن أدبه تغلب عليه الصناعة اللفظية، فلا يستحق البحث والدراسة، وهؤلاء، في الوقت الذي يتخذون هذا الموقف من أدب المنفلوطي، نراهم يحبّذون الدراسة والبحث في أدب شعراء وكُتّاب، لا يمتلكون أيّ شيء من مقوِّمات الأدب الحي، سوى إنتمائه إلى القديم، ومن هؤلاء شعراء مغمورون جاهليون وأميون وعباسيون، وكُتّاب مقامات ورسائل ليس فيها إلاّ التكلّف والزخارف اللفظية، لكنّ أدب المنفلوطي أدبٌ حيٌّ شكلاً ومضموناً، فهو "صاحب مذهب خاص في النثر العربي الحديث، ومدرسة في الأدب الحزين المظلم المنطوي على صور البؤس والحزن والحرمان، ومذهبه هو مذهب الأدب الإنشائي الذي يُعنى عناية كبيرة بالأسلوب، ولا يهمل في الوقت ذاته جانب المضمون".
