د.علي محمد طاهر حمزة شلش اسم الشهرة:علي شلش من مواليد 12 مايو 1935 بدأ حياته الأدبية بقرض الشعر ثم هجره إلى النثر,فكتب القصة القصيرة والمقال الأدبي والنقدي ثم الرواية والبحث والدراسة والترجمة.
أسس و أشرف على سلسلة"نقاد الأدب" التي تصدر عن هيئة الكتاب المصرية عمل بالتدريس الجامعي إلى جانب عمله بالصحافة في جريدة المساء,مجلة كتابي,مجلة بناء الوطن,مجلة الإذاعة والتليفزيون,كما عمل مدير تحرير لمجلة الكاتب الثقافية.
حصل على دبلوم معهد السيناريو ثم بكالريوس وماجستير ودكتوراه في الإعلام من جامعة القاهرة.
نال درجة الزمالة في الأدب من جامعة أيوا بأمريكا عام 1976.
ساهم في كثير من المؤتمرات والمهرجانات والملتقيات محليا وعربيا ودوليا.
ساهم في كثير من البرامج الإذاعية والتليفزيونية منها:"مع النقاد","مع الأدباء الشبان","قرأت لك","قصة قصيرة".
ترك مصر عام 1979 للإقامة في لندن وعاش متفرغا للقراءة والكتابة والمحاضرة.
عضو مؤسس في اتحاد كتاب مصر وعضو نقابة الصحفيين وعضو المجلس الأعلى للثقافة.
حاضر في العديد من المؤسسات الثقافية والجامعات المصرية والأمريكية والبريطانية.
نشر مقالاته ودراساته في مجلات وصحف مصرية وعربية كما نشر بعض قصصه ومقالاته بالإنجليزية في انجلترا وأمريكا.
ألف وترجم أكثر من خمسين كتابا في الأدب والنقد والتاريخ.
