هذه الحالة المعلقة بين ما هو كائن وما نريد أن يكون، أو بين الواقع والحلم المستحيل ترصدها الروائية شريفة محمد في "جاثوم" وتفعل ذلك من خلال تسليطها الضوء على علاقة غير متكافئة بين رجل وامرأة، متزوجان ولكل واحد منهما عالمه الخاص (سعاد) امرأة تقليدية، هادئة، رزينة، متدينة، ذات أنوثة طاغية غير مبادرة، قلبها شديد السذاجة، تؤمن بالماورائيات والأرواح، والحسد. أما (حاتم) الزوج فهو أستاذ جامعي وكاتب هائم في فضاء الأدب؛ الذي يتسع لكل شيء عدا زوجته، يعيش في عالم الأفكار والمبادىء والقيم، ويصطنع لنفسه هذا العالم الذي يبعده عن زوجته وعن الواقع شيئاً فشيئاً؛ يبحث في كينونة الأشياء، وهو على درجة من الثقافة التي تجعله يفلسف الأمور ويجعل لها معانٍ أكثر مما تحتمل.
هذه الحكاية، تصطنع لها الروائية خطاباً روائياً مالوفاً؛ قوامه راوٍ وحيد كلّي العلم، وزمن روائي متصاعد بأحداثه، ولغة شاعرية، رشيقة، أدبية وأنيقة، تؤثر الجمل القصيرة والتراكيب البديعة، تزاوج السرد والحوار، ما يجعل الخطاب إطاراً مناسباً للحكاية.
