إن هدف المقال الصحفي هو توسيع إدراك القارئ وتنمية وعيه وتعميق فهمه للحوادث والظواهر والتطورات بقصد المساهمة في تنشئته كإنسان واعٍ ومثقف ومطلع.
والصحيفة تجسد أفكارها وتعبر عن أيديولوجيتها من خلال مقالاتها، وتقوم عملية إعداد المقال بشكل يتناسب مع خصوصيته كفن صحفي، ومع الوظائف التي يسعى إلى تحقيقها، ومع الموضوع الذي يعالجه والقارئ النوعي الذي يتوجه إليه وتعتمد طريقة العرض في المقال الصحفي على عرض الوقائع بعد ربطها مع الأفكار التي تدور حول الظواهر الإجتماعية المترابطة والشاملة ويناقش المقال هذه الأفكار ويصممها ويتوصل إلى الخاتمة المنطقية.
ويتمتع الكاتب الناجح بإمكانيات إستخدام وسائل المعالجة الذهنية والعاطفية الملائمة للوظائف التي يسعى إلى إنجازها من خلال المقال وإبداع كاتبه.
ويتكون الكتاب من ستة فصول، حيث تناول الفصل الأول فن المقال الصحفي، وتعريفاته، وأنواعه وموضوعاته، وصولاً إلى التطور التاريخي للمقال الصحفي، في حين تناول الفصل الثاني البناء الفني للمقال الصحفي حيث تناول مفهوم البناء الفني (كمصطلح لغوي)، وعناصر البناء الفني للمقال الصحفي وصولاً إلى لغة المقال وقوالب كتابته وحجمه.
وعالجت الفصول الثالث والرابع والخامس البناء الفني للمقال الصحفي في صحف (الإهرام المصرية، النهار اللبنانية، الخليج الإماراتية) مبتدئة بالمقال الصحفي في هذه الصحف، ثم تناولت التحليل الإحصائي للبناء الفني للمقال الصحفي في كل صحيفة وصولاً إلى تفسير النتائج.
وأخيراً وضع الفصل السادس المقارنة لعناصر البناء الفني للمقال الصحفي في الصحف المختارة وعرض مقالات صحفية (إفتتاحيات وأعمدة صحفية ومقالات تحليلية) من الصحف العربية وصولاً إلى الخاتمة والمقترحات.
وأخيراً وليس أخراً، ليس هذا الكتاب أن يدعي الكمال وإنه استوعب موضوعه بحثاً وتحليلاً، وإنما هو محاولة متواضعة لتسليط الضوء على موضوع نعتقد بأهميته في الدراسات الإعلامية.
