يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ الأحقاف من كافة النواحي: السياسية والجغرافية والاجتماعية... إلخ، حيث إن هذه المنطقة منطقة عريقة تضرب جذورها في أعماق التاريخ.
إنها بلاد الأحقاف التي ذكرها الله تعالى في كتابه العزيز بقوله: ﴿وَاذْكُرْ أَخَا عَادٍ إِذْ أَنذَرَ قَوْمَهُ بِالْأَحْقَافِ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ النُّذُرُ مِن بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا اللَّهَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ ﴾.
ولليمن من العراقة والأصالة ما جعلها مكررة الذكر في القرآن الكريم: فهذه بلقيس حاكمة اليمن، وذاك سد مأرب الذي كان لسبأ، وهكذا... لقد سمى القرآن الكريم سورة كاملة باسم هذه المنطقة التاريخية البديعة. لذا فإن آثار اليمن لا يمكن أن تمحى من ذاكرة التاريخ أبداً.
وكتابنا الذي يتناول تلك المنطقة من اليمن «الأحقاف» خليق بأن يحتل الصدارة من المكتبة التاريخية عامةً واليمنية خاصةً؛ فقد كشف من المخبآت وأظهر من النواحي المهملة في تاريخ الأحقاف ما لم يهتدِ إليه كثيرٌ من فحول المؤرخين والنسابين الذين عنوا بهذا قديماً وحديثاً، ولا غرو في ذلك فقد أنفق المؤلف أكثر من ثلاثين عاماً في تأليف هذا السفر الثمين، جمع فيها تاريخ حضرموت السياسي والأدبي والاجتماعي، فألف أولاً تاريخه الكبير في تسعة أجزاء، ثم اختار منه هذه الجواهر النفيسة والدرر اللامعة، التي سوف تشاهدها في ثنايا هذا الكتاب.
وإن مما يلفت الانتباه ما امتاز به مؤلفنا من دقة النقل، وتمحيص الرواية، وعمق الفهم، وغزارة المادة، وسعة الاطلاع، إضافة إلى مقدرة فذّة في تحقيق الغامض، والتأليف بين المتناقض، ومما جعل الكتاب ذخيرة في التاريخ الحضرمي والإنساني معاً ذاك الإنصاف الذي يعصم المؤلف من التحيز إلى فئة دون فئة، واعتماد قول دون آخر، إنها أمانة النقل، ودقة التعبير.
