تهتم كثير من الدول بأدب الرحلات، حتى أن المراكز الثقافية والمعاهد العلمية والجامعات، تمنح الطلبة والأساتذة منحاً مغرية، كي يقوموا برحلة إلى بلد معين، أو إلى منطقة نائية، كل ذلك من أجل أن يطلع الرحالة على أحوال ذلك البلد، ويكتب ما يشاهد من آداب وقيم وتقاليد، إضافة إلى دراسة ثقافة ذلك البلد وتراثه الحضاري.
إذا أردت أن استبق الأحداث، فأنا اعتقد أن الإستشراق الذي ازدهرت مدارسه، في أوروبا وأمريكا خلال القرن العشرين، كان أساسه مذكرات وكتابات الرحالة أو الأوروبيين، الذين كانوا يغامرون بسفرات سياحية إلى بلدان الشرق، ويسجلون ذكرياتهم ومشاهداتهم على الورق.
أن الأدب الرحلات أهمية خاصة، من حيث أنه ليس أدباً إنشائياً تمليه ربات الخيال، وتزوقه الجمل المزينة بفنون البلاغة، الذي قد يكتب بأقلام ناصعة البيان.
لا شك أن أدب الرحلات يكتبه أشخاص وفق مقدرتهم العقلية وسعة ثقافتهم ومستوى درجتهم العلمية، ومدى تفهمهم لما يشاهدون أمام العين.
أدب الرحلات إذن أدب واقعي، يعبر تعبيراً صادقاً عما يسجله الرحالة، ولا سيما إذا كان موضوعياً في ما يصف ويقول.
ربما استطيع أن ادخل أدب الرحلات ضمن أدب المذكرات، غير أن أدب المذكرات - في الغالب - يكتبه الأديب عن رؤاه الشخصية وشعوره الذاتي تجاه الأشياء.
أدب الرحلات إذن ينبغي أن يهتم بالموضوعية في الحديث عن الآخر، من خلال شعور الرحالة، الذي يصف ما يراه، من غير تطرف ولا إنحياز.
يمكننا أن نعد كل كتاب في أدب الرحلات، مصدراً مهماً في دراسة الشعب الذي كتب عنه الرحالة، ونتأمل تأريخه الحضاري، وكيف انعكس على أحوال سكانه المعاشية والإجتماعية.
